I like to think that health is achieved through a number of different means. As we learn to listen to our bodies, we develop a deeper sense of intuition and a connection to our food and our activities. Despite the fact that health occurs on numerous microscopic levels inside of us, our experience of health takes place through our senses.
One aspect of health involves developing a relationship between our understanding of health and our experience of it.
Ultimately, health is about practicing and learning from our experiences. As time progresses and as the years go by, it is very common that what we once thought of as healthy, we realize no longer serves us. This is evolution.
I have been fortunate enough to have been involved in the healing arts all of my adult life. As my own knowledge and experiences develops, I am reminded of these 6 fundamental concepts. After all, it is many times the most basic aspects that are so powerful. After studying yoga for 11 years, I can say that what has transformed my ability to progress is refining the basics.
I hope you can find as much value in these 6 easy steps as I have.
1. Fresh Air
Spend time each day breathing high quality air, free from pollution, in nature if possible. The most basic form of nutrition and detoxification is inhalation/exhalation. Oxygen is vitally important for the functioning of metabolism. Various types of breathing exercises are excellent for overall health. Think of how good you feel when you breath oxygen-rich air. Many yogic breathing techniques, called pranayama are outstanding for overall health, as well as for self-discipline.
2. Drink Clean Water
The environment in which we live is polluted. Municipal tap water is polluted with fluoride, chlorine, chemicals & heavy metals. Invest in a high quality water filter, or high quality pure spring water.
3. Eat High Quality Food that is Right for Your Type of Metabolism
It is important to understand which food and drink is acceptable for your body and which are not. Be conscious of the type of food you choose to put into your body. It is highly valuable to develop a relationship with the food you are eating. Practice listening to your body, trusting what it tells you and remember what you learn. 4. Get Sunlight Onto Your Skin
Spend quality time outdoors, even if the sun is not visible. On days that the sun is visible, spend at least 30 minutes in natural sunlight, allowing 50% of your body to be exposed to the sun. The sun provides us with vital nutrients, Vitamin D and melatonin. Outdoor activity and time in natural light also increases biophotons, an area of health that is new and exciting.
5. Regular Exercise and Physical Activity
Spend a minimum of 30 minutes daily exercising or some type of physical activity. Three forms of physical activity that are very beneficial are: Weight bearing exercise, stretching and cardiovascular activity.
6. Proper Rest
Allow your body a minimum of 6 hours per night of sleep. As often as possible, go to bed between 10-12. If you are under a great deal of stress, sleep 8 full hours and take at least 30 minutes of additional rest per day.
