A series of studies have appeared in recent years regarding a combination of two Chinese herbs and their affect on peanut allergies. The preliminary evidence points to the possibility that the herbs Reishi mushroom combined with a formula known as We mei wan may effectively regulate key immune processes involved in the allergic response, and block anaphylaxis (1,2 ,3).
Specifications on These Chinese Formulas
The formula is known as FAHF-2 is a combination of reishi and wei mei wan. Wei mei wan has been historically used in Chinese medicine for the treatments of intestinal parasites. We mei wan contains the following herbs: plum fruit extract, phellodendron, coptis, ginseng, ginger, angelica, cinnamon, prickly ash peel. The reishi was added at the onset of the drug trials.
From an herbal perspective, the formula is very unique. It contains very cold, bitter herbs such as coptis and phellodendron, which clear heat. Simultaneously it contains very heating herbs such as cinnamon, ginger and prickly ash peel. The main herb, plum flower extract is sour and salty, and has historically been used for dispelling parasites. It is well known that reishi is an immune modulator, believed to modulate the TH1/TH2 response.
Clinical usage, and further research will determine the effectiveness of this formula for allergies.
