In a recent study, the amino acids L-Taurine has been found to be powerfully protective against the development of cardiovascular disease with Type 1 Diabetics. In similar studies conducted by the FMD, L-Taurine was found to increase nitric oxide in asymptomatic young smokers.
The study concluded that L-Taurine supplementation resulted in significant reversal of blood vessel abnormalities in type 1 diabetics.
L-Taurine: A Powerful Antioxidant
Taurine was first discovered in ox bile in 1827. Taurine is a primary constituent of bile and has numerous other critical function in the body. L-Taurine is synthesized from the essential, sulphur amino acid L-cysteine.
Taurine can cross the blood brain barrier where it can inhibit over-excited neurotransmitters as well as having a positive effect on the hippocampus. Taurine has also been shown to inhibit epileptic seizures. Taurine also is essential inside of the cells where it helps to regulate the balance between magnesium, sodium and potassium.
Taurine protects from the damaging effects of excitotoxins such as MSG. Because of its ability to increase bile production, taurine functions as a powerful antioxidant and protects from toxic, heavy metals.
Vegans tend to have very low levels of taurine due to the fact that vegan diets tend to lack the sulphur rich taurine precursor, L-cysteine.
In addition to reversing blood vessel abnormalities, L-taurine has been shown to reduce the effects of congestive heart failure by increasing heart muscular functions.
